Early Pregnancy HCG Tests: 1. Strip / Dipstick Tests: The strip format is the most simple and economical alternative for clinical diagnostic testing. To perform the test, the strip is dipped into a sample for 3-5 seconds. The reaction takes about 5 minutes with visual development of control and test lines. The results can be either qualitative or semi-quantitative, depending on the individual test or technique.
The width of the strip can be 2.5 mm, 3.5 mm or 5.0 mm. The sensitivity is 20 mIU/mL. 2. Cassette Tests: The cassette format is a plastic device containing the reactive strip within a plastic mold. The cassette has a region to write on, which can greatly improve efficiency in a busy laboratory setting. The sample application is standardized by the use of a pippette that comes with every test kit. The sample is applied into a test well to ensure the steady sample flow through the reactive region. The reaction takes about 5 minutes with visual development of control and test lines. The results can be either qualitative or semi-quantitative, depending on the individual test or technique.
The width of the strip is 4.0 mm. The sensitivity is 20 mIU/mL. 3. Midstream Tests: The midstream format has the reactive strip encased within a plastic mold with a removable protective cap. The sample collection and application is performed in one step by holding the test device under the urine stream for 10 seconds. The reaction takes approximately 5 minutes for the visual appearance of control and test lines. The results can be either qualitative or semi-quantitative, depending on the individual test or technique.
